Provenance
Provenance:The Artist, Florence, ItalyAnn Comninel, New York, acquired from the Artist, 1977Private Collection, acquired from the above, 1989Thence by descent to the present ownerLot note:Pietro Annigoni was an Italian portrait and fresco painter who achieved fame after painting Queen Elizabeth II in 1956, as well as her husband Prince Philip; American Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson; and Pope John XXIII. Ann Comninel met the artist through her employer Stavros Livanos, a Greek shipping magnate, for whom she worked for many years in New York City. At the request of her employer, Comninel assisted Annigoni with art exhibits and sale prospects in the United States. In 1977, she commissioned the artist to paint the present artwork. Annigoni titled it The Poet and wrote in a letter to Ann that he used a special mixed technique that used pastels and oil tempera, before shipping it from Florence to her in New York.
